I’d like to share with you a moment in my life that has special meaning for me – and for most Americans. On September 11^th, 2001, I was flying from Miami to Chicago. That day I was actually sitting in First Class on my way to a business meeting and the flight seemed uneventful. As the flight attendants made their preparation for landing and began their cabin checks, I felt excited for the upcoming meeting – optimistic that the day would prove productive.

As we made our soft touchdown on the runway, I peered out the oval window on my right. Something was different – something was wrong. I have landed at Chicago O’Hare hundreds of times and today the scenery didn’t match. As we finally turned off the active runway and came to a stop at a remote location, the Captain’s voice over the P.A. broke the silence. “Ladies and Gentlemen,” he began, “we have landed in Indianapolis due to a national security event.” For most everyone on that United flight, our hearts stopped. Was this for real? What happened? As the day progressed, news of the events became known worldwide and for each of us on that aircraft, we were thankful that we were safe and also grieved for the lives that were lost.

Passengers on those four flights had boarded just as I had boarded my flight that morning. The planes that slammed into the towers, the Pentagon, and the field in Pennsylvania were similar to the one that I was onboard. Circumstance had dictated my schedule and put me on an aircraft that day. Fate sided against the passengers of those four doomed aircraft and changed the world as we knew it.

This event changed me. This event became the turning point in my life that challenged me to recognize what was important to me. More so, the events of 9-11-01 solidified an awareness of who I was and where I was heading. No longer would I subject myself to circumstance. Instead, I would direct my life in a way that ultimately would provide more time with my family and the ones that I love. Looking back on my life prior to that cloudless day in September, my career path demanded my time away from home, away from my wife and children. I was a lucky one that day. Easily I could have been flying on those same flights that crashed that day but fate dictated otherwise.

At that point, I began to search for a vehicle that would 1) allow for me to provide for my family and 2) enable me to spend time at home versus time away at work. As fate would also dictate, I was introduced to Network Marketing. The business plan seemed unique and the opportunity seemed even better. By leveraging my time I was able to replace a portion of my income – enough that I decided a career change was reality. Looking back on the events that sad day, I grieve for the lives that were lost but I also rejoice in the lesson that I learned.

What is your turning point? Are you happy with status quo? Will you achieve your goals on your current career path? These were the type of questions that I had to ask myself. Was my time away from my family worth the paycheck that I was received? For me the answer was obvious – no it wasn’t.

I challenge you to ask yourself some difficult questions. Draw out your career roadmap and see where it’s taking you. Are you going to retire comfortably? Are you making the most of your time right now – spending it with the ones that you love? If no then realize that you have choices. I made a difficult choice years ago and since then, the path that I’m paving is much more rewarding. Open your mind and your heart and take the first step, you won’t regret it. I certainly didn’t!

So some of you may have heard about the 40-50 plan. What exactly is this theory and more importantly, how does it relate to you and your business. Well, about a year ago I was fortunate enough to have this concept explained to me very clearly by a business partner of mine. Hold on to your socks because here a rough wake-up call!

Most people try their best in grade school and high school with the expectation of getting into a ‘good’ college. Achieving this benchmark will ‘most certainly’ guarantee you a ‘good’ paying job after graduation. Upon entering the workforce, a typical employee slaves away at their ‘career’ by working 40 to 50 hours a week. If we followed this progression then we most likely will continue working for someone else for 40 to 50 years! Lastly, with our working years behind us, we hope to ‘retire’ on 40% to 50% of what we were making!

Folks, does this make sense to you? I have a daughter that is about ready to embark on this exact same career path and something deep inside of me is saying “No”! Why in the world do most of us conceive this as a solution? For most of us it’s because we were taught this career path from a very young age. Even Hollywood depicted the ‘ideal family’ in Technicolor with Dad leaving to go to work while Mom stayed at home and ensured the kids got off to school alright. As children we were taught to expect at least one of our parents to ‘slave’ away at the salt mine (as I affectionately used to call my job).

Gang, I’m here to tell you that there is another way – a better way… Residual Income.

J.K. Rowling wrote her first Harry Potter book only once. With each book sold she received a paycheck or a royalty. When the movie Harry Potter was produced, she got paid. With each ticket sold, she got paid. When an action figure was sold, she got paid. Do you get my point? With one effort she continues to receive income on a routine basis! Now, I’m not the best writer and I don’t expect to achieve her status as an author, nor can I write a song or a screenplay, etc… I can, although, tap into a highly successful Network Marketing business model that has proven to produce more millionaires than ANY OTHER BUSINESS!

Folks, the effort that you put forward now and for the next few years will pay ‘royalties’ for the rest of your life – and your kids’ lives, and their kids’ lives. We can create a LEGACY by simply being in the right place at the right time and working hard. I have proven time and time again that these simple efforts will repay you a thousand times over!

Another colleague of mine told me a story that also summarizes the Multi-Level Marketing business model. The story goes like this: A man once told a new recruit that he had a job for him. For the first month, the new recruit would ride a bus for 3 hours to a ranch, spend the next 8 hours shoveling manure, and then return home again that night. This task was repeated for 30 days – non-stop! But, in return for the hard effort, the rancher paid the recruit $500 for the month. The detail for the second month was identical except this time the recruit was paid $1,000. Finally, after completing the third and final month, the rancher paid the recruit $15,000 and also explained to him that this payment would continue monthly for the rest of his life!

So, would you slave away shoveling manure with this type of return? I think most of us would and I certainly have my shovel in hand!

Best of all, with steps that I’ve discovered we can now minimize the effort and accelerate the process by using technology. Initially I spent a bunch of time shoveling until I finally discovered the tricks that the internet allows. With several shortcuts that are available to ALL of us, we can look the 40-50 plan straight in the face and grab a shovel instead. Gang, let’s get busy and start digging – I can show you the way!
